Help me give my students the sets of thought-provoking novels tackling topics such as autism, immigration, diversity, learning disabilities and multiculturalism which will be used daily during our literature circles (book clubs) or read alouds.
Thank you for your interest in my project proposal! I am a public school teacher from South Florida. My 4th grade students need quality literature about thought provoking, stereotype breaking topics that promote diversity, representation, inclusion and multiculturalism.
My students are quite a multicultural group which is not reflected in the content of my classroom library.
I would like to provide them with the access to mirror texts: “when children cannot find themselves reflected in the books they read, or when the images they see are distorted, negative, or laughable, they learn a powerful lesson about how they are devalued in the society of which they are a part.”
My Project
My students need quality literature about thought provoking, stereotype breaking topics. Requested titles include Wishtree, The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, Who Is Malala Yousafzai?, Who Was Rosa Parks?, Out of My Mind, and The First Rule of Punk.
These sets of thought-provoking novels, tackling such topics as autism, immigration, diversity, multiculturalism and tolerance, will be used daily in our literature circles (book clubs.)
My students will engage in honest conversations about the literature and hopefully gain a better understanding of diversity and bias as well as the need for equity and justice.
Having a safe and non-judgmental forum where everyone can express their thoughts and gain insight into everyone's perspectives on various topics will hopefully foster a sense of empathy in our classroom.
