Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Teaching in the urban school district for eleven plus years, we have seen girls from various backgrounds and experiences walk our hallways. We know that every single one of our girls has the potential to be great, but we also know that in an urban district like ours, there is also the potential of being distracted and dissuaded from achieving their very best.
At our school, we created a group called Girls in Pearls to give our students a place to grow and a space to avoid the negative influences that can potentially hinder their success in life.
We have taken about thirty-six young girls under our wings to give them positive experiences and show them the possibilities that the world has to offer. They have participated in finance and banking lessons from professionals, have had women from various professions share their experiences, attended cultural rich experiences such as poetry fairs and plays, along with many more.
My Project
These simple, but humble pearl necklaces, will help us send off our 15 graduating seniors with a small recognition of their accomplishments. These senior girls were the founding members of Girls in Pearls and led the rest of the girls through workshops, seminars, cultural experiences, community services, such as lending a hand in food banks and shoe drives, and were role models for their younger, sister Pearls in the making.
In one year, the girls have matured and refined themselves to become unique individual ladies, Pearls.
They have pushed themselves and educated themselves with resources and skills to face college life, and begin their adult life, with confidence in themselves, recognition of their strengths, and a will to succeed.
