As an educator in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. These students face roadblocks and struggles every day. One significant hurdle that I have noticed is that education is not their main priority. I want to be able to engage my students and instill in them a love of learning, and a drive for problem solving.
My students are witty, unique, and capable of accomplishing anything!
I believe in them, but I need them to believe in themselves as well.
Most of them are being raised in single parent households or by older generations. From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. By doing this in an engaging and positive way, I am hopeful to inspire even the most reluctant reader!
My Project
Every year, our Title 1 school takes our 5th graders to Washington DC. With 70% of our students being free or reduced lunch, many students are unable to pay for the trip and the supplies that it takes to get there. We have several local sponsors that have stepped up and our helping our students get to DC, but the students are still not equipped with the materials needed to travel.
With health and hygiene being a main concern every day, these items will allow the students to ease the thought of being made fun of for having body odor, or having their roommate realizing that they didn't bring a toothbrush.
These basic heath care items will relax the minds of our students so they are able to have a productive, safe, and educational trip.
