Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As you know the COVID-19 pandemic has been remaking daily life for millions of Americans and their children. As a school teacher, it was heartbreaking to tell my students that we would not be seeing each other for a while.
We are a Title I school that does not have a 1:1 device for everyone, so I have to come up with other ways to reach my students so they will not fall behind.
This digital divide is so pronounced and students are paying the price. I have many parents who have lost their jobs and are wondering how they will get through this with bills piling up, lack of essential items, and lack of food. For those students who have devices, many do not have reliable WIFI in their homes. They end up using their parents’ cellphone to get connected to my zoomed lessons.
Though their outside environment may not be conducive to learning, my students have an insatiable love of learning. I know that if we provide them with the right support, resources, and opportunities, they can experience success.
My Project
My students have been home for over a month and they are adjusting well to remote learning.
We have been working daily on all academic subjects but they need some time to express how they feel artistically.
The bracelet craft will allow them to design bracelets they make using the beads provided. Some students like to draw and since many are so familiar with the game Fortnite, I thought they would like to draw these characters.
They know that it is safer to stay home but we all need to stretch, exercise, and even walk to keep our sanity. These balls are great because these are the same ones we have at school. They can play with their siblings or just find a wall to bounce it against. Kids need to be kids and if I can provide a smile, it will all be worth it!
