My Students

Almost all of my students come from a low socio-economic status. We live in a very rural community that is sadly being taken over by drugs.

However, despite these challenges we as teachers are still trying to push our students to be successful human beings, and to hopefully break the cycle of addiction.

Many of my students are currently in foster care. I have little resources, but I am hoping give my students the most welcoming, encouraging school experience that they can possibly have.

My Project

Our reading textbook series is fine, but the stories inside do not excite my students. I hear moans and groans every time I ask them to open their books. This is extremely upsetting when I am trying my best to build life-long learners that ENJOY reading.

We are in the middle of completing our first novel study on the book "Because of Mr. Terupt".

My classroom has totally changed! The kids are EXCITED about reading! The best moment of this year had to be when students started requesting we read another novel after finishing our current one. That is exactly what I'm hoping to do.

We are learning various concepts to boost comprehension skills while completing our current novel study. We are summarizing the text, learning rich vocabulary, addressing cause and effect, making predictions, and completing essays relating and responding to our reading. We are having great conversations, too!
