I am a fourth-grade teacher at a Title I school in Newport News, Virginia. At my school, we departmentalize, so all fourth-grade students use my classroom library. We have a very diverse group of students who truly want to learn. They are students who truly do want to succeed; however, many are struggling readers and do not have access to supplies or books at home. During the school closures, this has become more evident. The only books they are exposed to are the books they have access to at school. It will be crucial to have a wide variety of books for them to be exposed to when they return in the fall.
I truly believe in today a reader, tomorrow a leader.
My students have the ability to achieve their dreams and to become leaders in their community; however, they need books on their level to get them there and to help them develop confidence.
My Project
These books will help me enhance my classroom library and provide my students with a rich variety of diverse books. Students having access to a variety of books will encourage them to continue reading and to explore many different types of books-- including books with characters that they can relate to. The books that will be purchased are on various reading levels and include popular series like Dog Man, Geronimo Stilton, Dork Diaries, and Diary of a Wimpy Kid. These books include a wide range of characters and cultures.
By providing students with books on their reading level, with diverse characters and cultures, they will gain the confidence needed to learn how to love reading and to be future leaders.
Often struggling readers do not enjoy reading, because it is hard for them to find books that are appealing to them and engaging. They will often try to read books that are not on their level and can quickly become frustrated and start to doubt their abilities as students.
By providing books that are both appealing to students and are on their level, they can truly become confident and learn to enjoy reading. This, in turn, will motivate them in helping them realize that they can do anything that they set their mind to. My goal in my classroom is for my students to leave every day knowing that I am rooting for them and supporting them. I want them to realize that they are capable of what they set their mind to and achieving their dreams.
