Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Working in the poorest congressional district in the country, my students come in at a wide range of academic levels. They are enthusiastic and hardworking, but many have large gaps in number sense and/or basic math skills. As a teacher, I make every effort to give my students many opportunities to extend their work to higher levels and to raise the bar on their own personal expectations. They are welcome in my class for extra help or just a quiet place to work during any free periods of the day. I also strive to provide extra support for students struggling with basic skills and extra enrichment for students who are ready to take their work to the next level.
My Project
My students are most definitely going places. They have a strong desire to read and expand their knowledge. My kids are inquisitive, smart, friendly, and overall really good people. They are on their way to many great things in life, but they need a little help getting there. For 25 - 30 minutes a day, everyone in the school (students and teachers) stops what they are doing to read. "It's the absolute best time of the day," I often hear my students say. It is a time when our school participates in a culture which values the importance of reading a good book.
Because my students absolutely love reading, they are quickly making their way through our entire classroom library.
In order to increase the reading engagement in my classroom, I had the students create a book "shopping list!" All of the books in this project are from their shopping list! My 7th grade students' reading levels range from 3rd grade all the way to 10th grade. This year, all of my students will become better readers. Through small group conferences, my students with lower reading levels will build confidence and make strong strides. Students with higher reading levels will continue to excel and become even better readers by the end of the 7th grade. By supporting to my students' project, you will be adding engaging and interesting texts to our library.
