Mrs. Heethuis from Norton Shores MI is requesting Books through DonorsChoose, the #1 classroom funding site for teachers.

Today's Readers: Tomorrow's Leaders

My students need books with strong characters and lives that mirror their own so they can not only develop a love of reading, but an empathy for others as well.

My Students

Over 130 students step into the walls of my classroom every day, looking for a safe place to be themselves. They need a place where they can grow both emotionally and intellectually in a welcoming and positive environment. My kids come from many different socioeconomic backgrounds, living situations, family systems, and cultures.

It is crucial that everyone feel accepted, that we put ourselves in one another's shoes and refrain from judgment, and that we make the world a better place for everyone.

My Project

My students are challenged to read 10 books each school year, something that seems overwhelming in the beginning. Through in-class reading time, their only homework being reading, peer discussion and book projects, this becomes a point of pride for my students, rather than a seemingly impossible task.

This project seeks books with strong characters, diverse settings, and social justice issues.

These books will not only spark an interest in my resistant readers, but it will also help my students to develop empathy to those around them.

Classroom libraries are so important. If we expect students to read, we must give them the resources to do so. These books will be checked out, enjoyed in and out of the classroom, discussed and shared with others.
