My students need magnetic letters, word sliders, alphabet picture magnets, a chart stand and pocket chart that allow them to practice reading and phonics skills independently at our Word Work Center.
My students come to school each day filled with enthusiasm and energy! One of my favorite things about teaching kindergarten is that the students come in with hearts filled with curiosity and joy. Our students come from a variety of cultures and family situations. I have so enjoyed being their teacher and I feel that each students brings a unique personality and perspective to our classroom.
While our love for learning is large, our school's budget for additional classroom materials is not.
There is no way to receive these types of learning materials without asking for donations or the funds coming out of my own pocket. Our school does not receive Title I funds, so budgets are quite small. Our school is located in Omaha, NE. Omaha is the home of Offutt Air Force Base and we have many military families. This includes my family, as I am the wife of an Army veteran.
My Project
The materials in this project will be used in my Word Work center. These fun and engaging materials will allow students to work on phonics skills independently while I am working with small groups of students on targeted reading skills. I will use the alphabet picture magnets to allow students to sort syllables, beginning and ending sounds. The phonemic awareness activities will be used to help students practice hearing and manipulating sounds in words. I will use the magnetic letters and word sliders to allow students to practice their word building skills. The large pocket chart and stand will be used for a poetry center where students can practice building sentences and practicing sight words.
The variety of learning materials in this project will allow me to rotate the materials in my Word Work center frequently to keep things fresh and new for my students.
These materials will be a great way to keep our emerging readers focused and engaged. love that these materials are highly durable and do not require paper. We are not creating waste and the materials can be utilized for many years to come.
