My students are the sweetest! They are so eager to learn, despite all of the distractions that COVID keeps throwing at classrooms. Many of them are English Language Learners, and that may encourage them to work even harder to learn. They will not allow anything to stand in their way!
Every day they read, count, and grow their academic minds beyond what many of them even thought they could!
While learning can be challenging at times, they want to push through and have even made goals of "being the smartest kids in the grade!" Their motivation and hard work is encouraging and contagious, even to me as their teacher.
Reading is a foundational skill that can be tricky when you live in a home where there is limited available time or resources. For this reason, I make sure that each day, my students spend time reading in class in case that opportunity is not available at home. This is done by having independent reading time as well as a time where we read together. This is such a fun time during our day, but it is also a challenge due to lack of resources.
Reading together brings a joy to our room that is magical!
When we read together, students enjoy listening to the story, but they also find themselves wandering off into another land. This is because we do not have a book for each student to follow along and remain actively engaged.
With these classroom sets of Charlotte's Web and The Boxcar Children, my students will not only be able to follow along, but they will be exposed to more text and a whole new world of reading! They will be able to take turns reading and expand from simply listening to the story to practicing their fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary skills.
