Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Over 80% of students at my school are considered at risk, with 90% of our students qualifying for free/reduced lunch. For a large majority of them, English is their second language. Reading and writing in English is a challenge for many of them, but they show up to school ready to learn. They are internally motivated to do their best and be successful. Many of them go home and have to tackle adult tasks such as caring for younger siblings, cooking and other chores. A high percentage of them do not have an English Speaking parent to help with homework, creating an even bigger burden for them. Our community continues to rebuild after Hurricane Harvey, even a year later. Resources are still needed after such an impact that storm left. Despite their struggles, they walk into school with a smile on their face.
My Project
There is a lot of research in the education world that states if a child is not reading on grade level by the end of 3rd grade, it is highly unlikely that they will ever be able to catch up. I want to change that for my students. I want to bring more books into the classroom. I want to grow their love for reading.
Bringing more books into the classroom opens more opportunities for reading during the day.
Adding Math mentor texts in my classroom library allows me to integrate reading across other content areas as well. Having an iPad with a wireless speaker will allow us access to online audiobooks when print copies are not available.
Much of our community lost everything during Hurricane Harvey. A year later, we are rebuilding an even stronger community. Basic necessities are the priority, putting books and technology at the bottom of the list. I would like to be able to provide some of that in my classroom.
