My Students

I teach 8th grade at a middle school in Collinsville in a small suburb of St. Louis. I have a diverse group of learners with a wide range of abilities and skill levels. Over 25% of our students are Hispanic, and around 10% of the school population are English Language Learners.

My students are happy to be back in the classroom this year, and so am I!

After learning remotely for much of the past two years, they seem to enjoy being back among friends and teachers. I am so lucky to work with this wonderful group of students!

My Project

I am seeking donations to help diversify my classroom library. I recently switched from teaching high school to middle school, and have been working hard to build an age-appropriate and diverse classroom library. I've spent many Saturdays shopping at thrift stores and yard sales searching for high-interest books and have done a pretty good job, but need some help to really create a diverse library full of various genres, authors, and subjects for my students to read. I am striving to create a culture of readers within my classroom. I dedicate at least 30 minutes per week to silent reading. Students are able to read a choice book, and it's fun helping them choose a book to spark their interest. I also have students partner up for book talks so that they can hear about other books their classmates are enjoying. My bulletin board is dedicated to "Books We Love" where students fill out a form about a book they've recently finished and enjoyed, and they love to see their book recommendations decorating the classroom. I also maintain a "Bookflix" website where I showcase new additions to my classroom library. Students visit this page once they finish a book and are in search of something new to read. I have chosen a variety of books from different genres and reading levels, as I have readers with varying ability levels. Your donation will help my students nurture a love of reading that will last a lifetime!
