I work in a low-income school and teach all 4th, 5th, and 6th grade reading classes. Every single one of my students are different. They are eager to learn and love to read. They come to school each day ready to work and learn new things.
I am a strong believer in how important reading is for kids.
My goal is to try get them new books to channel their imaginations through reading and to expose them to different types of novels.
My Project
In my school we departmentalize 4th, 5th and 6th grade. I teach all of the reading to the kids. There are certain novels that I teach in my class, but we are in need of new, more current titles. The kids go to specific groups each day for extra help in reading called "WIN" groups. In these groups the kids have the opportunity to read novels along with other skills they work on. But, a lot of our novels are falling apart and are so old and outdated.
The kids are hungry for more.
They want more diversity in the literature that they read and I am SO excited about that! Not only will I use some of these new novels in class, but they will be utilized in smaller groups as well. I wish I could, but I can not just purchase 5-10 new groups of novels for my kids. This is why I am asking for your help.
