Help me give my students an emergent reader classroom library that is filled with leveled fiction and nonfiction texts to support literacy development and encourage a love a reading.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach a class of eighteen incredible, hard-working pre-kindergarten students. I work in a Title I, low income public school, and many of my students come from struggling backgrounds. They face a variety of challenges each and every day; therefore, it is my ultimate goal to create a welcoming and encouraging, worry-free learning environment.
The love that my four-year-old students have for learning is immeasurable!
They especially love reading books with their partners, dramatizing stories to share with their friends, and challenging themselves to become overall better students. We believe our children should be given every opportunity to achieve, and are working hard to ensure safe, learning-rich environments. Your help in this matter will be greatly appreciated.
My Project
My students are in need of books at different levels so that I can best meet their instructional needs when it comes to teaching reading. We will use these books in during small groups for guided practice, in our library station for independent practice, and to send home in nightly book bags so parents and caregivers can have an opportunity to engage their children in reading as well.
It is vital for reading development to provide students with books in their hands at a level that is not too easy nor too difficult.
This balance is where learning takes place when kids are first starting to read. My classroom could use leveled readers to help promote reading instruction. Many of my students do not have many books at home, specifically books that will best foster their learning. Having readers like this in the classroom gives students the power to choose books they know they can be successful reading, thus growing their confidence. Lastly, the variety of books is sure to inspire and engage all readers!
