I'm proud to call my school and community my home. We live in a rural, low income area full of love, kindness, and school spirit. Kids are setting alarms and getting themselves on the bus each morning. They come to school searching for love and encouragement. Parents work long, hard hours and are honestly doing their best. "Sweet Home Alabama" is the song of our hearts.
Every day my students chant, "Work harder, to get smarter!" My mission is for every child to believe in themselves, in hard work, and in their future.
I see hope and eagerness in their eyes. It inspires me, and I hope to kindle that love of education every day. Join us as we chant, "Today a reader, tomorrow a leader!"
My Project
Students need real books. I say "real" because the paper readers that come with our reading series and the books that fill my library are void of any real plot. They are largely in part decodable text, which has its place but does nothing for engaging and creating a reader. They don't interest our students and have hardened some against reading.
I want to put real books in my students' hands.
Real books that are leveled, so they feel successful and can enjoy the story. I think having quality leveled text is a game changer. It can make the difference in creating a life-long reader.
Each "Guided Reading Collection" comes with multiple copies of each book. During small groups, I will use these books (instead of our paper books and printed passages) to teach comprehension skills.
Most of my students do not have any reading materials at home. I would love nothing more than to send home quality books (not just a printed passage) home for my students to read with their families.
If I can spark the love of reading in my students, then I can count myself a success.
