I teach in a large school urban system in a fantastic PK-8 building filled with eager to learn students, innovative, hardworking staff members, and supportive administrative leaders. My school houses approximately 1,200 students that live in the Northeastern portion of the city. It is the largest of the four PK-8 buildings in the city. Our minority enrollment is around 42% of the student body. Our offerings and programs provide our students with a plethora of learning opportunities including a balanced literacy framework and a conceptually based math program.
Specifically, I teach first grade and it is important for me to always make sure they are provided with every opportunity and every resource they need to be able to learn, work, and grow as students.
My classroom is the home of approximately 25 eager learners. Their abilities range from students with disabilities to students identified as gifted learners. Since our school district reports almost 98% of our students as economically disadvantaged, students lean on me and our school to provide them with what they need to learn.
My Project
This project was created to motivate my students to read at school and at home. Research has shown that reinforcing skills at home helps students to maintain and enhance the skills they have learned at school. The leveled library mobile will help organize books into accessible genres and levels for the students to grab and go. The reading bags will provide a safe transport for books that we send home for them to practice. The treasure chest is a reward to motivate them to read at home and to develop the love of reading independently.
The first grade team has developed an emoji theme incentive program to create excitement for learning.
Last year we had an emoji reading event and our students were very excited about this. We would like to continue this theme to promote reading at school and at home. I am so excited to watch my students grow this year as learners and develop a love for reading.
