Our first grade classroom is a tight-knit community of learners. We started the year learning each other's names and now we are one big family. We share our thoughts, opinions, and ideas in a respectful and supportive environment. Our room is filled with diverse learners that help us recognize, understand, and accept all of our unique differences. My students came into first grade as beginning readers. We built our reading stamina throughout the year, and now they are leaving as confident and strategic second grade readers.
My Project
Our classroom library is a very important part of our literacy program. The new, high quality and engaging books will provide easy access to the right books for our young readers. The books will help build their reading skills, encourage them to think, but most importantly promote a lifelong love of literacy.
We know first graders need lots of books but also quality books that appeal to their interests.
Updating my classroom library with the books I've selected for this project will ensure that my students can find books that will meet their interests and reading abilities. They know reading is fun and that the more books they read the better readers they become. The books I've selected include picture books and beginning chapter books, as well as fiction and nonfiction genres. The classroom library supports best literacy practices by giving students their choice of reading material and time to practice their reading skills. The enjoyment they experience from reading great literature promotes their love of learning and success in school. The classroom library is a hub where my readers go to grow and share their favorite books.
