This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My class is a special education class with students who have a range of disabilities. One thing my students have in common is their need for a student-centered classroom library. The new Common Core State Standards call for more rigorousness learning. As a special education teacher, with students who struggle a lot with reading, it is hard to keep up with all the new standards as well as my students' reading needs/interests. My goal is to build my classroom library in order to create book bags that would include a book related to the common core standards as well as a book of my students' interest. The on-level engaging books will encourage the students to read more and increase their reading comprehension. The books would also be used to teach the students lessons on how to read in the classroom and at home.
My Project
My students currently have a classroom library of books from previous teacher who retired. As pa standards have changed, so have the interests of children today. A lot of the books in my library are outdated and unrelatable for my students. It is hard enough for my learning support to want to read with all of their struggles, but it is even harder when they can't find a book that interests them. One of the quotes that I implement in my classroom every day is
"The more that you read, the more things you will know.
The more that you learn, the more places you'll go"-Dr. Suess. It is hard to emphasize this saying to my students, when the books are truly not appropriate for their ability level and especially their interest level. Having a new classroom library will not only help with reading in the classroom, but it will also give me the opportunity to send home book bags for continuous practice. This will help increase my students' fluency levels and even more importantly their confidence level.
