Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
For the past three years, I have worked at a Title I school in an urban area where over 80% of the students are provided with free or reduced lunch. I have had many students each year that talk to me about their family struggles and classify as FIT (families in transition) because they do not have a permanent place to live. Many of them come from broken homes and have many things that trouble them outside of school. Despite all the struggles and hardships my students have been faced with, they never cease to amaze me with their ability to face each day with grace and a fresh attitude.
For many of my students, coming to school is sometimes the only time that they can truly allow themselves to feel like a kid.
As a result, providing my students with as many opportunities as possible is incredibly important. I know that there are times where they are not going to get the chance to do or see certain things. Therefore, making their education diverse and meaningful is of the utmost importance. They truly deserve the absolute best, and nothing less.
My Project
These books will continue to encourage a lifestyle where reading is prominent for my students. I have a class library with a number of titles the students enjoy reading, but having been moved from fourth grade to second this past year, our library is in need of more titles at their reading levels. I have a wide range of reading abilities in my classroom. As a result, it is important that students be given plenty of time to read according to their interests, so that they may increase their reading ability. A lot of my students do not have a library of books to choose from for independent reading at home. Therefore, it is my responsibility as their teacher to provide them with a number of books that they will enjoy and be able to utilize both in our classroom and at home. My students enjoy being able to check out books from our class library and bring them home to complete their daily reading assignment.
Since most of my students do not have an overwhelming amount of books at their house to choose from, the books I provide in my classroom can be the reason students want to immerse themselves in a great book.
The books that are on this list come from a range of interests my students have shown over the course of the school year. I have had the opportunity to preview a few of the series requested in my classroom, and students have been begging for more. I believe that with a continuing supply of their favorite series, students will be able to find the joy in reading and take their ability to the next level.
