What makes my students special? They are a group of kindergarteners in our rural, Title One school that love school, love learning and love life even though many come from a low-income home and can't afford many of the extras needed for school. Teachers must provide many of their own materials needed for their classroom.
In this world, where having good reading skills (and higher level reading skills) is a must, teachers have to provide instruction for reading on an individual basis so that every child becomes a successful reader in her/her own time and way.
Teachers no longer stand up in the front of the class and give instruction to all students and expect all students to succeed. One way to do this is to have them read books on their appropriate level. Some are higher level readers and some are below basic. No matter their level, a book box with books on their level is a must in a diverse classroom.
I would love to be able to supply my students with the reading skills on their instructional level that they need to succeed in this competitive world even though they have started at a disadvantage.
My Project
Teaching kindergarteners to read is arguably the most important aspect of primary education, enabling children to gain insight into the powerful world of imagination and provide skills needed to read to find information; all skills needed to be successful in a competitive job market.
Success in reading has a direct effect on the progress made in most areas of all curriculum.
In my classroom, I aim to create readers for life, children who develop a love of books, who enjoy reading and read for pleasure.
By having individual book baskets, my children will be able to have books on their own level, whether a high reader or a low reader, that they can read on a daily basis. I want to create an environment where books are valued and treated with care and respect. Book baskets for each child will help me ensure that all of my students have access to the resources they need at each developmental level.
