"Readers of good books, particularly books of biography and history, are preparing themselves for leadership. Not all readers become leaders, but all leaders must be readers." - Harry S Truman
I teach students Kindergarten - Sixth Grade in a self-contained and resource setting in a rural school in Arkansas.
All of my students come from high poverty situations and are on free or reduced lunches. The greatest struggle for many of my students can be found in reading. Although I teach up to the Sixth Grade, most of my students read on a First Grade level. However, this doesn't stifle the drive that my students have to learn.
My Project
We are in desperate need of guided reading book sets. Guided reading is an instructional approach that involves the teacher working with very small groups of students that function on a similar reading level. These texts offer challenges and opportunities for children to think critically. The ultimate goal of guided reading is to move students closer to independent reading. Right now we have very limited access to resources such as book sets. By having these book sets in our classroom, we will be able to devote more time to becoming better readers.
Most, if not all, of my students are at least two grade levels behind in independent reading ability.
With constant access to guided reading book sets, my students will be able to work to bridge their gaps faster. As a result, they will become more college and career ready.
