"Once you learn to read, you will be forever free," Frederick Douglass stated. You may remember the days of being in first grade, learning vowel-consonant patterns, sight words, and reading until you finally accomplished reading a book from cover to cover. Help my students achieve this dream!
My first grade students live in a rural community nestled in a small area of North Carolina.
Our School is a Title One elementary school, located in a community where there are many low income families. Despite the economic status of these students, they are active, eager to learn and most of all, enthusiastic about reading!
My Project
The resources I requested include various games and manipulatives for increased phonemic awareness and phonics practice. Some of these materials will be used as literacy centers that the students will rotate through during our Reading/Language Arts Stations time, while others will be used as free centers for students to access when they complete their required work throughout the day. Being a young teacher, I prefer to use games and hands-on activities rather than worksheets as much as possible. These centers will also teach the students to work together, get along and to use their manners. The other resource I requested is a word wall set. A word wall is crucial in a first grade classroom, not just for looks, but to actually refer to throughout the year. With this word wall, we will continually add a few words and even play games using it, such as "I'm Looking For a Word." This will help the students to remember the word wall is there to assist them everyday.
This is my second year of teaching and my first year of teaching first grade.
My classroom is completely empty of any resources, stations or centers for my students to rotate through. It is crucial that my students begin the year with these resources. I have so many ideas I would love to implement in my classroom but I must have these resources to make the year a success! Please help me to make my classroom plans a reality for my students. Thank you for impacting my students' education!
