Mr. Forstag from Portland OR is requesting classroom basics through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.

To Write... To Err... To Write Again!

My students need dry erase markers to practice, practice, and practice some more with letter formation, placement and size, upper and lower case, numerals, appropriate spacing between words, etc.

My Students

We are one of the two "neighborhood" (non-immersion) Kindergarten classes at a K-5 school in Southeast Portland, Oregon. We have ten girls in our class, as well as ten boys. All students come to school daily prepared to work hard and to have fun.

Writing is the most challenging task for Kindergartners.

Towards achieving mastery and complexity in writing, we try and afford a variety of opportunities to model for students. Parallel to this goal, we also want students to have opportunities for practice, practice, practice. We want to encourage students to try their best, to know that less-than-perfect is GREAT, and most importantly to emphasize that ONLY through diligent practice will writing skill be built.

My Project

Dry erase markers have a finite life! We use them in whole-group language instruction, as well as in small group writing practice. These materials are not provided to us by the school.

Working with dry-erase boards makes it much easier for students to correct errors, as compared to paper/pencil/erasers.

It also enables students to _quickly_ move on from self-identified errors and demonstrate their ability to be successful.

The availability of these materials will bolster students' confidence, as well as their willingness and ability to recover from self- and teacher-identified errors. The end result will be student growth in all fine-motor writing tasks.
