Scientific and technological literacy is becoming more and more crucial in the growing world. I teach in a suburban school with limited technology. My students come from diverse backgrounds and learn from each other. My classroom is set up for authentic data collection and interpretation. This allows the students to shift from a teacher-driven "sit and get" mindset to a problem-based, inquiry focused classroom. Students focus on the scientific method to arrive at their decisions and defend their hypothesis.
My students have a thirst for science and answers.
They come into my classroom from different backgrounds but work together towards the common goal: understanding the world around them. This is accomplished using the limited technology we have with their personal technologies they might have. This presents the problem: our probe ware has increased but our base technology has not.
As a teacher, I strive to provide my students with authentic experiences in the classroom. I want them to be able to not only collect data, but use it to become scientifically literate in the changing word.
My Project
In a time when technology is increasing, the needs for delivery system increases. My students spend about 30 minutes with direct instruction. Currently, we have two carts that are connected to hold the laptop, projector, document camera, and speakers.
Students need to have appropriate access to background material in order to be successful.
By providing a multimedia cart, the direct instruction aspect of the classroom will be seamless and streamlined. It will also provide a way for power cords to be streamlined to use one cord: keeping the tripping hazards to a minimum. By having all the technology on a cart, the science classroom becomes mobile.
