Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students range in age from ten to eleven years old. They are, in many cases, the first of their family to learn English from childhood. They are at a critical point in their education as they are on the verge of moving on to middle school. Many of our students are come from immigrant families and some are immigrants themselves. As Immigrants they face special challenges like language acquisition and adapting to a new culture. They also deal with emotional issues that come with being uprooted from everything that you know and brought to a new country.
They have left friends, family, and familiarity behind.
In many cases they lived more comfortably in their country of origin and experience mental trauma at having lost familiar comforts. I want their classroom to be an inviting and exciting space for them.
My Project
This project will help us finish the year out with some cool projects and allow us to maximize the space we have in our room. This project works together with other projects we have going to help us make the most of our room. Bean bags will allow students to move to the carpet area and work in comfort on lap desks allowing for variation to their daily routines. Students will love to read, and work on math and science from the comfort of a bean bag on the carpet. Students will use the surface dial in a project based learning unit where they will design their own hybrid animal and then work with technology to illustrate it and eventually create a digital diorama to teach one another about inherited traits.
We are really excited to finish the year with as much hands on projects as possible to maximize our learning!
Students will use Rollercoaster Tycoon to explore personal financial literacy in an engaging way. I used to play this game as a child and I remember learning so much about income and expenses, marketing and creating a good product. Students will be guided as they engage with the game and be challenged to write about their strategy as they engage with the game to develop their financial literacy.
