This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students range in age from 4th grade up to 8th grade (about 9 to 13 years old) and either have me as a band director or an orchestra director. Most of them join my program with little to no experience on a musical instrument and spend these years developing fundamental skills of music.
These hardworking young musicians come from families with low economic means, making it difficult to acquire the materials needed for such classes.
However, despite this, my band and orchestra members are eager to learn new skills and are always very excited to play a musical instrument. I am always working on ways to provide the most enriching experience I can in the hopes of opening new doors for my students' futures.
My Project
I have inherited a small band program at my school, which I have been at for two years now. In that time, I have noticed a surge in students who want to join the program and learn a musical instrument. Sadly, I am limited by the amount of instrument I have loan, and percussion is especially challenging since instruments are often shared by several students. Having this percussion kit will allow me to provide more options to students who want to learn and need materials loaned from the school.
This percussion kit will help more students participate in the percussion section.
Thank you for your generous help and support of my students as we work together to build this band program!
