Our room is made up of twelve students ranging from grades nine to twelve. Our students have their own sets of abilities and triumphs.
For some, being successful means being present and attentive.
Buckminster Fuller said “You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete.” As teachers we need to constantly change our approaches, set up, and philosophies to best meet our students' needs. In order to reach our students, we must get on their level and give them the tools they need to be successful.
Looking at my classroom, there are many things that do not meet the needs of my students. My goal is to make a classroom that catches their spirt and energy; a classroom they can feel comfortable in and where they want to spend time.
My Project
Students all have different comfort levels and flexible seating could help these students find what is comfortable for them. Many of my students have a hard time sitting in traditional seats for long periods of time, due to their size and attention deficits. Ball chairs and wiggle cushions will allow them to move or bounce while they sit and focus. Stools offer up different types of seats and allows them to sit at the counter in the room to work if they feel the need for more space.
Comfort is the key to success!
The tables being asked for will help my students because many of my students are tall teenagers and they do not fit well with traditional desks. Since my students are with me for the majority of the day it is important for them to be able to sit in seats that fit their bodies. Also, having two large tables will help the students by allowing them to sit in groups and work collaboratively.
My goal is to offer up many different seating options. If my students are comfortable, they are more likely to pay attention, stay focused, and feel like they belong.
