Currently, I teach Language Arts to 7th and 8th graders in a wonderful, but small, rural community in Kansas of about 5,200 people.
Our closest metropolitan area is over 230 miles away, so it is very important for us to try and provide as many experiences as possible through our school district. Our students just do not always have the opportunities to participate in cultural activities like students may in other places.
One of the primary ways we stay connected and experience the world is through technology. Yet, due to our limited financial resources, we are not always able to provide our students with hands-on, real world applications of that technology. It tends to be teacher led and teacher driven out of necessity. I have about 20 students at a time trying to share one video camera. It is just not conducive to creativity or productivity.
The addition of two cameras to my classroom will help to allow all of my students to produce projects that they can share on-line with other students around the world in a safe, structured environment. Hopefully it will encourage them to produce high quality, creative work.
