Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I would like to get a horseshoe table and chairs to go with it for my guided reading and strategy group lessons. The horseshoe shape makes students more accessible, while they are reading, during the guided reading lesson. It would also be used for a quieter place to conduct assessments during the year.
Last year was the final year of Christopher School's Title VII grant. We are already feeling the effects of being in a low socio-economic neighborhood where families struggle to meet daily needs. Now we are maintaining instruction with a lower budget, making my wish non-fundable by the school, district, or families.
I work with a great team of teachers (there are four of us) in the second grade and we share our students (80) for guided reading and English Language Learner instruction, therefore, all 80 students will benefit from the table and chairs.
We are also working on Cycle of Inquiry teaching and during the cycle we have lab-class lessons that we do for each other. When the team and coaches are observing a guided reading lesson in my room, there will be more space for them to move around the table to watch the students and myself.
Having a horseshoe table in my room for guided reading and strategy lessons will help me and my peers to "see the power of reading."
