My students need engaging modern literature and a Shakesperean classic novel.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My students are curious, energetic, intelligent, and love learning. I work with students who face many challenges, not only academically but socially as well. I teach a self contained classroom with students that have intellectual and emotional disabilities in a turnaround school that has been identified as one of the lowest-achieving schools in a low achieving district. In spite of the challenges that my students face, they come to school ready to tackle learning and contribute to our amazing classroom learning environment everyday!
I've been so fortunate every year to have a group of students that are committed to learning, in spite of whatever obstacles they face outside the classroom.
I aim to create a sanctuary in my classroom where students feel safe emotionally, physically and academically. I also aim to provide the best education I possibly can. DonorsChoose.org has been instrumental in helping me achieve both goals, consistently, year after year!
I can imagine the looks on my scholars' faces when I tell them we will be reading two full length novels this year. I can also imagine their faces as they become excited as they interact with the literature. Giving my scholars the opportunity to transform their thinking and be transported to different time periods is my goal and literature allows me to meet that objective.
Having the opportunity to engage my scholars in rich literary experiences from the classics to young adult fiction fills me with a pride that will only be surpassed by their own satisfaction at their achievement.
I struggle every year finding relevant and engaging reading material. The books in this project include a classic that should be read by all high school scholars and a modern novel that touches on touchy and relevant subjects that should be addressed. I am so excited to have the opportunity to bring these two important pieces of literature into my classroom!
"Romeo and Juliet" is a classic that every high school student should have the opportunity to read. I get excited thinking about the discussions that will arise as we read this classic piece of literature. I know my scholars will get excited to learn more about the time period and also discussing how the same themes in the classic novel may play out in modern society.
The "Hate you Give" is an important novel that addresses complex issues. The discussion that will arise from the reading of this novel will stretch the thinking of my scholars and myself while leading to difficult but important conversations.
