"To read is to empower, To empower is to write, To write is to influence, To influence is to change, To change is to live." --Jane Evershed In my third grade classroom, I have several students who require special reading instruction. Three of my general education students are below the third grade reading level, while four other students have out-of-class special education instruction for Reading and Math. The special education students are part of my Social Studies class, but they are with their special education teacher during the time I teach Social Studies. Their literacy problems mean that they cannot catch up by simply reading the text, but I don't have a cassette player or headphones for them to listen to the accompanying tapes of our text. I also have a Houghton-Mifflin Reading program on CD that would be helpful to my other students, but no means for them to listen to it. I have observed that students who are behind in reading can easily comprehend the material when they hear it, but just cannot read it yet. If I had a Listening Center (for CD and Cassette) with several headphone ports, my students in special education would be able to keep up with the rest of the class in Social Studies, and the other students who are behind in reading would be able to use the Listening Center to develop their literacy. I would also like to use the Listening Center as a Learning Center when I use differentiated instruction. While I'm working with one group of students, the others could listen to children's literature on tape or CD. I also have classical music CDs that I would like to play during our DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) time, and during their weekly reflection time (when they write about what they learned in school during the week). I also plan to obtain other resources on CD, such as phonics and foreign language courses, that will be helpful to my students during differentiated instruction. The Listening Center would be most beneficial in helping my students feel comfortable in the classroom while they develop their reading skills. It will ensure that those students who are currently struggling with reading will be able to keep up with the rest of the class in the other subjects, helping to promote harmony in the classroom.
