Like rockets rumbling red-hot on a launch pad, my students are ready to blast off as READERS! My students are preschoolers from the ages of three to five.
My early readers are on a course to stellar READING abilities despite that they live in communities near Detroit where the illiteracy rate is in the double digits.
Many of my students come from families who are struggling economically and so qualify for free early childhood education in my Head Start classroom.
My young readers love to be READ new books, RHYME, and make SILLY SOUNDS.
My Project
Phonological what?! Yes, phonological awareness is the ability to differentiate letter sounds. This ability is key to learning how to read. More than just learning the alphabet, my students must know the letter sounds.
You can help my students READ by helping us afford the out-of-this-world books and materials listed below.
My students and I are evaluated three times per school year to ensure students are advancing toward Kindergarten readiness. We track each student in nine domains, one of which is phonological awareness. This domain of knowing letter sounds is usually the lowest scoring - so I need your help!
The project takes place in a rigorous Head Start classroom where we utilize the evidenced-based HighScope curriculum. The materials for practicing letter sounds and rhymes will reinforce recognizing letter sounds; the woodland cushions and books will create an inviting reading nook; and the magnetic letters and rock letters will add sensory learning of the letters. Your donation will strengthen my teaching around phonological awareness.
