Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a Hispanic Special Education teacher in a small school with a high number per capita of students with special needs. Many of them are so smart and lovable, but have come from schools in which they felt ostracized or just plainly asked to leave. These students have already faced so many obstacles in their lives from learning disabilities to personal tragedies.

They have come to our school to succeed where they have been welcomed with open arms.

Our students remind me of those welcomed by the Statue of Liberty shining to the world. As the sonnet by American poet Emma Lazarus states, “Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free." Indeed these students have come here to be free to learn without judgement and prejudices.

My Project

Our charter school has only been in session for approximately four years. In that time, our students, parents, and teacher had to fight to keep our doors open. We are a small school with very limited resources. We do not have a formal library. There are donated books that line our walls in separate book shelves. However, those books are only for the advance readers of our many gifted and talented students. For those students who read at a kindergarten to third grade level, they have no access to reading material that they can enjoy with ease.

Inclusive education for all students begins with a good book in their lap which they can fully enjoy.

We are a Title I school which is still in it's infancy struggling to provide the best educational experience possible for our children. The diversity is tremendous and much support through donations is truly needed.
