Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a bilingual special education teacher who serves an elementary school in the South Bronx. It is one of the poorest in the nation.
Our students are mostly immigrants from South and Central America, who are in need of more than pencil and paper to understand the world around them.
They share the drive to learn about the world through videos, pictures and even YouTube videos. The need for supplies is great since our resources are often very limited.
Education is often the only escape. It gives them the hope that one day they will be able to experience the world. Our students are in a self-contained cognitive impairment classroom.
My Project
This graphing calculator can help our 5th grade students to visually and see how different calculators work and how they solve different kinds of problems that may help them get into screened schools and be better prepared in the future.
Giving students access to the latest graphing calculator technology will allow them to compete with others students in this 21st century.
Students are continuously being asked to support their mathematical thinking and the graphing calculator can aid them in doing so. Having the ability to see what they are used for and what they will need to use in middle school will create success. With such an emphasis on specialized schools, our students are starting from a disadvantaged starting point. Let's create higher level thinkers!
