With all of the emphasis on 21st Century Learners, it is very important to place technology into children's hands. Most kids have computers, cell phones and video gaming systems. Few know the connection between their "gadgets" and their future.
The students in my classroom are funny, energetic and thirsty for knowledge.
Like many preteens, they are independent and must investigate things for themselves. Their natural curiosity often has them asking questions of me; sometimes too quickly to answer! Math and Science are hot topics within my classroom. Many of my students have expressed the desire to become doctors, nurses, and even a marine biologist. Our normal math curriculum is rich and offers the opportunity for differentiation. Many times we break up into small groups after our traditional lesson is over. Students explore math on their own terms. Some play math games, while others work on PowerPoint presentations. Small group instruction and differentiated centers are key to reaching every student.
My Project
My students will use this tablet to experience Math on their own level. There are so many websites and apps that can customize a child's learning experience based on their skills. For the more advanced student, this means challenging them to go further, or think deeper. For the struggling student, the tablet will give them the privacy to grow at their own speed. Making Math more interesting and disguising it as fun, will make my students better thinkers. Problem solving is an important skill. This tablet and case will help to build their skills.
Bringing enthusiasm and interest to the subjects of Math and Science most definitely will impact the lives of my 6th graders, not only this year, but for years to come.
Making sure they are ready to meet the challenges of their future education is a priority to me. I try to picture my students in the future. I see Math and Science in their futures. I see them making strides in the district's STEM program. I see them going to INFINITY AND BEYOND!
