This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My middle school students are energetic, imaginative and eager to learn. They just love art and desire to explore various types of mediums and art techniques. My students look forward to attending art class each day, where they can express themselves creatively. We are a culturally diverse school with students representing many countries.
I tell them, "Turn Mistakes into Masterpieces." I want them to believe in what they create and take pride in it.
Here, we are guiding and developing each student think creatively and be leaders. We have a welcoming school atmosphere. There are many encouraging murals and quotes throughout our hallways. We are a Title I School. However, we are driven to keep expectations high for each and every one of our scholars.
My Project
I love that my students love to draw. I see them sketching in their sketch books and on pieces of paper often. They sketch portraits of people, mostly anime style portraits. They are drawing using their mechanical pencils or graphite pencils. They add some shading and value to their pictures as well.
Students are reluctant to color their artwork, due to fear of messing it up.
Some actually tell we that they do not like color. Is this possible? My teacher frustration hits. I do not want to discourage their creative opinions or their process.
However, I can encourage them and help build their self-esteem. So, I am looking for a happy compromise.
How can I get them to add color without adding color? Ah ha! These grey tone markers are the answer, I believe. Letting them see that grey, blacks and the white tones are also color. These grey tone markers will level up their art work to be bolder and have richer tonal values.
My goal is to inspire them to see the value in adding value.
