This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are beautiful and brilliant. Our class consists of multi-level learners. Our school is a high-poverty, Title I school, meaning that one hundred percent of our students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. A fraction of my students are homeless and many of my other students have houses or apartments they share with one or more families. Some of my students do not have a bed to sleep on. I've noticed they are hungry in the mornings and by midday. We are an extended day school where the kids stay later than a usual school dismissal time.
Our school is located in a high-poverty neighborhood.
My students work very hard every day. Our class has a ninety-eight percent attendance rate, which means the students rarely miss school. We value our learning time.
My students come from multi-ethnic backgrounds, each with distinctive cultural traditions. In our classroom, we blend our traditions to form strong community ties.
My Project
Many parents feel uncomfortable or left out of their children's education because so much of it takes place outside the home.
Our primary goal with our TnReady breakfast is to build a bridge between home and school.
We want our students and their families to come to our special event and learn together how to positively impact learning for themselves and as parent-teachers at home.
As the high-stakes testing season approaches, we want our children to have full bellies as they start the state assessment.
By providing the kids with a pancake breakfast, We will also serve cereal just in case they don't like pancakes. Of course we need pancake mix and mixing bowls. We also need a waffle maker. We will use the Chafer dishes to serve the students and parents. I am able to fill their stomachs so they can focus on the high stakes test. Plus, it is an opportunity for me to support the kids beyond our content. Breakfast should be the least of my students’ worry.
