This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I work in an amazing elementary school that is situated in a large urban city. Our students face many struggles and barriers to be at school. Many of those barriers that they face include living at or below the poverty level. Our whole student population receives free breakfasts and lunches.
Last year, we had an overwhelming number of our families that were displaced from their homes and living doubled-up with another family or they were living in homeless shelters.
Aside from the daily struggles to get to school, our students were facing major barriers to finding stability in their young lives. Our aim is to help our student feel loved and cared for the minute they walk through our doors.
My Project
Our TLC (Tender Loving Care) Packs will make a difference in the lives of our students whose families have become displaced because of homelessness. As the school counselor, I am in daily contact with our District Homeless Liaison. The reasons vary for their living displacements. Some of our students have experienced house fires, domestic issues, and financial difficulties. Quite a few of our families have moved into our district as a result of being homeless. They are starting over in all areas of their life. Each of our students that experiences the loss of their home desperately needs stability in their life.
At our school, we would like to provide our students facing homelessness with a TLC Pack, which is a backpack filled with 2 notebooks, 2 folders, and a pencil pouch filled with pencils, eraser, scissors, crayons, and a glue stick.
They will not have to be concerned about not having basic school supplies like other students. The TLC Packs are a way of helping to 'love on' our students in a very tangible way.
