My students are just turning 5. For many of them, this is their first experience in a school setting. Some of the students have special learning needs, and many are learning English for the first time. The majority of their families live below the poverty line and rely on our free meal plan for their children's breakfast and lunch. We are a very diverse community, with over 20 languages spoken.
Our school is a high poverty, Title I school, with high expectations for all.
Each day, we practice letters, phonics and sight words. We study science and math. We incorporate technology through the use of iPad apps, and we learn beginning engineering concepts through the use of building blocks and other manipulatives. At the end of the school day, the children are so excited to see their parents and tell them all the things they did at school. The parents are very supportive, and they enjoy spending time with their little ones, reading stories and learning new things.
I want my students to see themselves in our curriculum. The iPad Pro will help us in this endeavor by providing an opportunity to read and interact with ebooks with central characters of diverse cultures and backgrounds. The girls in the classroom will also be able to work with apps that increase their knowledge in STEM subjects such as math and science. We will also be able to use the iPad with the class Smartboard. Math software, as well as videos, can be mirrored from the iPad onto the Smartboard so that everyone can participate in the learning.
When technology is readily available, it becomes second nature to girls and they can go into the STEM fields college and career ready.
I have set up a center in our classroom where my students go to work individually with iPads. Our class size has grown this year, and if this project is funded, our STEM center will have enough iPads so that a small group of students will all be able to have an iPad of their own to work with. I am requesting this bigger iPad so that 2 or more students will be able to work together by sharing, and will be able to better see the screen.
By funding this proposal, you will be giving my students an iPad Pro and Smart Keyboard case, that they can use to read ebooks with diverse central characters and learn STEM concepts. They will be able to see themselves in their curriculum! Thank you for supporting public schools and for helping my class!
