Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our early childhood center has over 200 students who attend each day. They come from a variety of backgrounds with many different experiences. 53% are of Hispanic background, 20% are Asian, 10% are white, 7% Pacific Islander and 10% Black. Our students come with many challenges to our classrooms. For instance, 63% are English Language Learners while 11% are considered Migrant and 64% qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. While our students have significantly high needs, they are a joy to work with and deserve nothing short of the best we can offer them!
My Project
Family engagement is a big push in our district. We are learning the research behind getting parents more comfortable with the learning their child is engaging in while with us. Through the professional learning we've had around family engagement, we've learned the importance of helping parents understand what activities they can engage with at home that will support the learning of their child.
These materials, (play dough mats and counters that each child will take home) will be used to engage families in events that teach our families how they can help their child at home learn the big ideas of our grade level content.
Each student will take home a dough mat kit that allows the
families to interact with counting together in their homes. This is an important component of research based strategies when doing family engagement activities.
These materials will save us the resource of time in creating similar items that could be sent home with families.
During our family engagement event, we will teach the parents what it looks like to engage with their child with these tools as learning agents so they can spend time in the summer working with their child and reduce the summer slide that we often see in schools.
