My students are from rural Maine. They are a diverse group of kids but all of them share a love of learning. They come from various backgrounds but this doesn't stop them from being curious, eager, and ready to learn. As a school system, the teachers, staff, and community work together with the resources we have to create opportunities that will inspire children to become responsible community members and citizens.
We aim to inspire and motivate through real-world connections and project/problem-based learning.
We try to teach our children how to have and show a growth mindset when faced with challenges. They learn to face challenges and learn from mistakes, and we work on showing grit when work gets tough.
While our school is very small and rural, we have a very tight-knit community that is very active in the schools and because of that, we offer many opportunities for our students and have rigorous academic expectations, pushing our students to excellence. However, we also strive to help our students become better people through many different community outreach programs and service learning programs, and they learn not only to be wonderful students, but also caring individuals.
My Project
I have noticed that my books are getting older and I have a lot of great, older titles in my library but I would love to get some new books that kids' are interested in. I find every year, I have many reluctant readers (especially boys) who are disengaged from reading, so I continually look for books that might spark their interest and turn them into avid readers. These story titles are some of the most popular fantasy and book series that my kids are constantly talking about, so I'd love to be able to have some on my shelf for silent reading time.
Having choice and books that they enjoy makes the lesson more engaging and more relevant to the students.
We use these books during silent reading time and during reading conferences as we work on specific skills. Students can also bring these books home to read and can use these books during virtual learning days to do their reading assignments. I know in particular, The Last Kids on Earth series and The Wings of Fire series are books that are constantly out in our library because so many students want to enjoy them.
