Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students love to learn, play, dance, and live a healthy and active lifestyle! My students are hard-working, eager, and ready to learn and better their lives. We are a Title I, low income/high poverty school with all the drive and readiness to succeed, but need the right resources to do so. I teach a high percentage of the students who may be considered a behavior problem, are significantly below grade level in Math and English, and often have tough personal and home lives. However, in my dance class, these students thrive. They find passion and purpose in class and excel in a kinesthetic/active class such as dance.
My Project
If you've ever attended or know anything about the competitive dance world, you know one thing... it's expensive! From the studio time, music cutting fees, costumes, makeup, and transportation... the list seems endless. I work in a Title I, low-income school where we have the largest population of students with disabilities as well as the largest number of students who qualify for free or reduced lunch.
But these circumstances don't stop us from following our passions and living out our dreams.
We've created a dance team that is as good as the rest of the surrounding studios. We spend countless hours, days and weeks rehearsing and then after, rehearsing some more. The school is as supportive as it can be, sponsoring our competition fees and sometimes even paying for costumes, but they can't cover anything. It's a stressful request to ask my dancers to provide their own makeup and hair supplies as those items can add up QUICK. With this amazing donation, you can ease the stress of some of the hardest working dancers around and supply enough hair spray and eyeliner for many years to come. It may seem juvenile to supply makeup to a local dance team but you're investing in the confidence of these dancers feeling like they stand a real chance against the rest. Having the same shade of lipstick can be the smallest difference in one team from another.
