My students need new flexible seating options. The yoga balls I bought three classrooms ago have given out, and we no longer have any seat fidgets. A lot of my students greatly need these!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students have to deal with a lot in their home lives, but you would never know it upon meeting them. They come to school every day inspired and committed to bettering themselves and giving their best work. A lot of them have come into the upper grades at a first grade reading level, but because they are so motivated to learn they leave at the end of the year at grade level. These students inspire me every day to not just be a good teacher but to strive to be an amazing teacher. Their compassionate and loving hearts remind me that they need someone who loves and cares about them along with someone who educates them. I love my school and my community more than words can say!
My Project
I brought flexible seating to my classroom 3 years ago, and it wasn't easy starting this trend in a title 1 school. Usually you see these kinds of classrooms in more wealthy communities because teachers are able to receive a lot of help from the school/district and community/parents. I started this with a lot of help from Pinterest, my checkbook, and the kindness of friends.
Over the years, I've seen the huge difference it makes for my students.
A lot of my students have trouble concentrating in class because A) they have a lot of issues at home they are thinking about at school. B) They are hungry because they don't eat at home. C) They have disabilities or behavioral/emotional issues that can't be easily resolved in a general education classroom. D) All of the above!
The yoga balls, chair bands, and soft seats give students more options to better fit them and help activate movement that isn't distracting. Sitting in plastic chairs all day is challenging for concentration because children are naturally active and need less restrictive seating options. What works for one student doesn't work for all, so having different options allows for students to use what they need to learn. Seating with movement helps reduce anxiety and distracting others. Overall, a flexible classroom helps everyone! Teachers can teach, and students are able to learn!
