Mrs. Atis from Camden NJ is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.

Tired of Translated Books!

My students need books that were written originally in Spanish. The majority of these titles were written by Hispanic authors from many of the same cultures as my students.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

This fall, I will be teaching a class of 25+ bilingual Kindergarteners. All of my students will be learning to read and write in their native language of Spanish, while they are also acquiring English language abilities! In my classroom, we are all proud to come from a variety of cultures and to be able to learn and value the Spanish language in an academic setting.

The students in my community of Camden, NJ are strong and resilient, and they have already persisted through many challenges at this early point in their lives.

Many have immigrated from other countries themselves and are experiencing the unique challenge of acclimating to another culture and language. Our classroom is a safe place where they can take risks and grow while surrounded by peers with similar life experiences. We need authentic Spanish children's books that reflect our diverse community of learners and allow them to value their Latino cultures.

My Project

All children deserve to have access not only to books that serve as windows to others different from themselves, but also books that provide mirrors to see their own lives and experiences reflected. My students are all of a variety of Hispanic cultures, and in my bilingual classroom, they are proudly learning to read in Spanish as they also acquire English. After my first year of teaching in this setting, however, I realized that the majority of the Spanish texts we were reading had been translated or adapted from English.

There are many rich, diverse children's books written originally in Spanish, and my proudly bilingual students deserve to see their cultures reflected in the books they read.

This particular set of titles represents Latino authors from many countries, and they span a variety of themes and genres. With these books, my students will be able to relate to characters who have to explain their two long last names, or who long to know the island country their parents once called home. They will also hear folktales and rhymes that were made to be spoken in Spanish, and written by authors who my students could see themselves becoming someday.

I would greatly appreciate your partnership in bringing authentic and relatable children's books into my students' hands that will help them cherish the language and culture of their families and develop their identities as proud Latino Americans.
