Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Each morning, my students gather in the classroom and assemble their instruments. They begin to tune their instruments by listening to the concert master's note. Once they are done tuning, they go through warm-ups and finally rehearse our pieces.
Aside from the obvious signs of the class not having the traditional chair-and-desk look, the students in my class are unlike any other.
They are enthusiastic, even on the gloomiest days, and are always filled with positive energy. They come from a low-income community with a school district that does little to financially support extra-curricular activities. However, our music department is a true exception. Our combined choir and instrumental programs have produced phenomenally talented young adults and leaders who strive to inspire countless audience members. It is sometimes difficult to distinguish them as plain high school students at first glance. Yet, little do you know how much they are empowered through the arts.
My Project
Each student has to learn how to care for their new instruments and develop good habits for future years. We need to show them how to oil the instrument valves and grease the instrument slides to keep our brass instruments working well.
As a student begins to learn an instrument it is important to teach maintenance and care.
The responsibility that they learn can lead a student to learn accountability for their belongings. The disinfectant, lubricant and cream will help to keep the instruments in good working condition and allow the students to learn with and set backs due to instrument malfunction.
By being able to gift them with items to make their work easier and more special they will continue to work hard. A little appreciation goes a long way to students and my students give so much.
