Tiny Tinker Lab

Help me give my students a Tiny Tinker Lab! We are reading the memoir The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind. We are hoping to use the Design Process to take items apart, and investigate their purposes.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Showalter's classroom raised $391

My Students

The 6th and 7th grade students I teach are inquisitive, highly motivated, and love to read. They are always searching for their next favorite book and have a unique spunk and humor about them that makes each day an adventure.

Our students come from all corners of the city.

My students care deeply for each other, and have formed lifelong bonds as classmates and friends. This has made seeing them grow as readers and learners all the more enjoyable.

My Project

6th grade students are in the middle of Module 2: Critical Problems and Design Solutions. We are reading the memoir The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind by William Kamkwamba. William is an innovative and determined teen who is working to solve critical problems (famine and lack of electricity) in his community. He uses the Design Process to dream up a windmill. The windmill will generate enough power to bring light and water to his community.

During the design process, William spends lots of time taking things apart, and investigating pieces.

He learns how to recycle wires, metal, and rubber and create energy.

We are hoping to use the design process to investigate every day items in our lives! In order to do this, we will be creating a Tiny Tinker lab where students can take apart items like markers, candles, toys, and electronics. We hope to figure out how things work, and share our learning.

Your donation will provide pairs of students with the essentials for a "tiny tinker kit".
