Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students attend a public charter school in inner-city Houston, Texas that prepares them for a university or college after graduation.
It is difficult to maintain the hope, grit, tenacity, and fortitude to realize your dreams and be a positive change for our world, yet these band students defy the odds to become more than expected.
Our Band Program is building from the ground up, mostly teaching high school students as beginners. My students do not let conventional norms stand in their way, they realize their goals more deeply, and they create their own opportunities in order to find success.
My Project
Our Band has a double-sized classroom with carpet, but the ceilings are 7 feet tall and the amount of sound produced by these small classes is ear-shattering.
We drastically need sound panels on our walls to regulate the acoustics in our small room and promote more advanced musical concepts.
It is nearly impossible to have a combined band rehearsal of 90 students within a combined space designed to hold desks for 25 each.
As the band director, I have 5 band classes throughout the day, plus 2 additional drum line classes in the room. Although each class is about 15 students, the students are learning to play with some incredible volume.
The volume and air they use allows them to get better sounds on their instruments, but at the cost of not being able to get more advanced concepts like balancing between sections, blending each section together, or even being able to hear other individual instruments from the amount of residual noise bouncing around the room.
These sound panels will allow us to continue working on sound development without sacrificing more advanced band concepts that rely on how well a student can listen to and react with other students in their music-making.
