My students are a bright and brilliant group of young people who are in the process of learning to truly grow through their education and community. My group of students this year are such a unique group of individuals that have been celebrating each others' differences. I am extremely proud of the community that they are building and have seen them grow tremendously.
The school is located in a lower income area in the Silicon Valley.
Most of the students at the school receive free or reduced-price lunch. It is a Title I school in East San Jose, California with a high population of English Learners. Although we are lacking many resources, the fighting spirit found within the teachers and students push us further towards our goals.
My Project
My students have recently been introduced to TED talks, and they love watching them. They become so engaged in what each speakers is saying. Poise, passion, and confidence shine through the words of each TED talk giver, and that confidence is something that I would love my students to embody.
My students are at an age where they are realize things that they are passionate about, so I would like to give them a platform to build and share about their interests.
The choice to request a podium and carpet from this project came with a lot of thoughtful deliberation. I do realize that actual TED talks don't have a podium, but I feel like it will give my students a sense of security as they grow into their confidence and learn to become great speakers. The use of the carpet will be multipurpose. It will be used to actually set the stage and lay out where a "stage" would be since we don't have an actual stage in the classroom. The other use of the carpet will be for the morning meeting or for those who work better on the floor, like in flexible seating. However, the main purpose will be to "set the stage" for their own forms of TED talks or presentations. I'll make sure to do this by framing it that way in their minds and making sure that they know the importance of the "stage" area.
