My students are tinkerers... But, I don’t want anyone to think that is a bad thing.
The world is in desperate need of them.
Tinkering has been the foundation of many great inventions throughout history. As technology advances, teachers are tasked with finding a way to provide our tinkerers with the tools needed to spark creativity. I want to inspire my students to become the great innovators of their generation. It begins with teaching them how to be computational thinkers and ends with them holding their solution in the palm of their hands.
My Project
We are requesting a 3D printer and filament to use for maker projects. I teach Journey to Careers to high school students. Since our school is near Barksdale Air Force Base, many of my students are from military families just like me. As we work our way through the 16 Career Clusters, I like to spend a little extra time working with the Information Technology and Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics career clusters. I do this because we do not offer an elective in computer science or engineering on our campus. So for many of our students, the time we spend working with those career clusters is the only opportunity they will have to experience what it is like to write code for a computer program or design a product from the ground up. We currently use Code.org’s Code Studio and KhanAcademy’s Intro to JS to teach the basics of coding. We use SketchUp and TinkerCad to learn the 3D modeling skills needed to develop their design ideas.
A 3D printer would allow my students the ability to extend their learning to those final steps of building a prototype, testing, and redesigning.
Without those steps, my students never know if their ideas/solutions really solve the problem. A 3D printer is the missing piece of my puzzle.
