Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from various backgrounds. Some come from shelters, large families, or foster care. Our kindergarten grade is secluded in a separate building, away from needed resources. For many, this will be the first time they are exposed to a school environment. They will have to learn many new routines alongside academics they have never been exposed to. Our classroom has to be a place where they feel comfortable and look forward to coming every day. Some of my students have been exposed to trauma early in their lives; therefore, affecting their social-emotional growth. Our class not only becomes a place of academic learning but a secure place to grow their social emotional experiences.
My Project
Have you ever notice all the different structures that make up a community? How they compliment each other or how they fit? Well a five year old has. All four and five year olds are full of questions and wonderings, they are always tinkering. With the LEGO community builders, community figures and LEGO plates they will get to plan new ideas and figure out how to make them happen through experimentation. Students will have to plan out what their communities will have, how many houses, what community workers will be in it and how many legos will be needed to create them. They will work with partners to do the planning and creation this will help with their tinkering. The LEGO plates will serve as foundations for Their buildings, students will have to estimate, count and create from their plans. They will be able to enjoy more hands-on learning and be investigative of what’s happening as they are creating community structures. During these times of STEM experimentation kindergartens become more independent.
